Minnesota Freeze at 49th Parallel Cup

Minnesota FreezeThe Minnesota Freeze brought the largest contingent of players in the USAFL to represent the United States against Canada in the 49th Parallel Cup.  In the Under 23 game, Minnesota was represented by

  • Brent Mergen
  • Steve Fashant
  • Ryan Sutherland

Representing the US Freedem women's team were

  • Kathryn Hogg
  • Mare LaVictoire
  • Becky Kraft
  • Vanessa Kahn

Last but not least, in the US Revolution senior men's team we had

  • Danny Hansen
  • Andrew Werner
  • Ryan Marx

In addition,  Jason Becker was coaching the US Men's teams and Steve Arnott was handling umpire duties.

The men's teams won both of their matches over the Northwind from Canada. In the U-23 game, the US sped out to a 3 goals to nil lead in the first quarter including a goal from Brent Mergen. Ryan Sutherland helpd the us to a convincing victory with a nice running shot from about 15 meters out in the 4th quarter.

The women's team lost a hard fought match against the Northern Lights by 2 goals.  Becky Kraft fought for a ball that just fell of the goal line and was able to get off a hand pass to Kathryn Hogg who left footed it from the goal square to keep the US in the game.

In the final match of the day, Canada took an early lead but the US hung tight and eventually pulled away winning by a comfortable 6 goal margin. Canada was leading from the start and into the third quarter.  The US took the lead from a beautiful soccer goal from Andrew Werner a few feet in the goal square.  Canada was mounting a comeback until the the 4th quarter when Danny Hansen put the game out of reach by chasing down a ball that was kicked over his head, sprinted away from his player, took a bounce and boom when the dynamite,
