5K incentives
The Freeze 5K is the first run of the season and will form the basis of the Fitness Ladder. Players hoping to make the Senior team must be suitably positioned on the fitness ladder. If you don't run in the Juvenile Diabetes 5K, you'll be running a 5K at your first training so we can complete the ladder -- so you may as well join in the fun on April 11.
For those players who do think it is all about running fast, good on ya.
Here's some friendly incentives:
Beat Barney
Cirsten Paine has offered to donate $5 to the Freeze for each player that beats her in the race. In return, she requires that each player she beats must donate $20 to the Freeze, this includes those who do not show up; - so No-Shows are in for $20 anyway.
(race-day volunteers are exempt)
Beat The Coach
Becker will offer a similar deal. Anyone who beats him gets $5 donated to the Freeze (by him) in their name. You don't have to pay if he beats you -- 'cause he thinks the old man's gonna beat a lot of you.
(his current time is 31 mins).
Beat Danny
Anyone who beats Danny Hansen gets a kiss, in the name of the Freeze, from Danny Hansome.
Go Zach!

Last reminder about the 5K event.
Good news; with just 4 days to go until the 5K we are on track and excited about making this event a huge success in its first year.
The current forecast calls for a nice sunny 55 degrees, perfect for a quick stroll around a beautiful lake.
The race start is 10:00am at the Nokomis Beach House, parking is free along the roads (you can park on Cedar and walk across the softball fields if the roads near the beach house are full).
For runners, be prepared for what seems like a great day for running!
If you're pre-registered, you'll want to be there by 9:40 to get checked in, have your number pinned on and get stretched.
If you're registering on the day, you'll need to be there by 9:30, although there's no telling how long the line will be.
Mail-in entries are closed, but online registration is still available until Thursday the 9th. Registration on the day is $30.
Volunteers should be there around 8:30 to begin setup. Look for Mary Evans or Chris Secrest when you arrive. Responsibilities will include: table setup, handing out t-shirts, getting people signed up, recording times and food/water set up; everyone, including runners and walkers will help clean up -- we're representing the Freeze, putting on a quality event from start to finish
Freeze Players, don't forget to wear your Freeze jumpers so we can spot you easily and record your time. Besides us looking like a club, the JDRF contingent will know whom to thank for putting on this awesome event

10 running Rules to Remember
Spring 2009 Shoe Guide
Kicking the dew off the grass.
Aussie Rules in Australia has traditions that cross many demographics.
It doesn't matter if you are a kid from an upper class suburb of Melbourne, or a remote rural town in most states of the country, you still have to do your time and "kick the dew off the grass".
Allow me to explain. Most leagues are structured to play all their games on a Saturday with the highest level "the seniors" starting around 2pm. That means working backwards; the Reserves play around noon, and the Juniors before that. Most leagues have at least two junior levels, so the youngest get the pleasure of playing nice and early in the morning. Now, keep in mind that although it can't compare to Minnesota, footy downunder is a winter sport and yes, it can get pretty darn cold some mornings, the least of which results in a field covered with dew. So the little tackers get to run around on the frozen field first to thaw it out. (One upside is you get to extract revenge on the adults by using up all the hot water in the showers).
Much like those little tackers, we here in Minnesota are about to "kick the dew off the grass", (although ours is permafrost which does finally melt only to be replaced by a layer of goose droppings).
In less than two weeks our pre-season begins.
So brush off your best frost breakers, and join us as we kick off another season and try to go just that one game better than last year in our hunt for a National title.
For all you new players; the first couple of weeks are the greatest opportunity to come along if you are new to the sport. We go back to absolute basics and tailor our workouts around "rookie" players.
We hope to see everyone there.
Season Kick-off and try-outs:
9:00am Saturday April 18th.
At Lake Nokomis Fields.
Bring: workout gear, cleats, a mouth guard and water.

Help support Aussie Wildfire Victims
Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the people who reside in the areas directly affected by the devastating Victorian bush fires. Donations to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund can be made to the Australian Red Cross website;
Appeal to close in mid-April
After a record breaking appeal and with the bushfires in Victoria now thankfully under control, Red Cross would like to thank the hundreds of thousands of people, as well as governments and corporate Australia who have contributed to the biggest fundraising appeal of its kind in Australia.
Recognizing that there are still a number of events yet to be held, they have decided to close the appeal on Friday 17th April 2009.
